Learning Imperative
(Handout for my Students)
They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
- Isaiah 40:31
The past is not so silent...
This is written in the hope of fostering an atmosphere conducive to learning, pleasant interaction and better understanding among us with the goal of personal betterment for us all. I believe that students take formal education in a university because of a purpose, a goal. You want to achieve and be successful at something! You want a better future for yourself and your loved ones. In light of such hope, it is my desire to help you in achieving your goals. And mind you, you are already endowed with the necessary faculty to achieve your goals. Yes, everyone does! History is a silent witness to the truth that for a human being, the future need not be a continuation of an undesirable past. Their past did not prevent Steve Jobs from making Apple computers; Ramon Magsaysay from becoming president of the Philippines; and, Abraham Lincoln from becoming president of the USA. The pioneering board topnotchers from Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology (now BSU) believed they could and they did.
How? By using the magnificent birth-gifts [1] all human beings have been given. Yes, all humanity is created equal: with the same gifts! The first of this is the freedom of choice. We have the freedom to choose our response to whatever happens to us and around us; response-ability. This power of choice means that we are not merely products of our past genes nor of how others treat us. They unquestionably influence us, but they do not determine us. We are self-determining through our choices.
Through the years you may have been convinced that you cannot do any better anymore. That is simply untrue! You can become a lot better when you exercise your freedom of choice. Your power to choose the direction of your life allows you to reinvent yourself, to change your future, and to powerfully influence the rest of creation. It is the one gift that enables us to elevate our life to higher levels. Many others have done just that.
As a college student [2], Louis Pasteur was called mediocre by his professors. But by age 26, he had completed a doctorate degree. He went on develop the anthrax “vaccine” and the “pasteurization” technique.
When Wilma Rudolph was 4 years old, her left leg was paralyzed. She later said, “the doctors told me I would never walk, but my mother told me I would, so I believed my mother.” Wilma’s mother made countless sacrifices to get Wilma the medical treatment she needed and in the 1960 Olympics, Wilma set a world record in the 200-meter run. She was later heralded as the fastest woman in history.
So, what do we use this freedom of choice for? As David Starr Jordan said, “There is no real excellence in all this world which can be separated from right living” we first need to choose to be in harmony with principles and natural laws, another of the birth-gifts. No matter what others say, the natural law is, “A man reaps what he sows” [3]. We need to plant before we can harvest. We need to study in order to learn, a passing grade comes as a give-away of learning.
Learning begins with us...
Every human being is endowed with the ability to learn. As Issler and Habermas (1994) put it, “God has made us creatures of curiosity. We all have a strong, built-in desire to learn… Motivation to learn is an inherent characteristic of being human. Like any other, it must be developed to its fullest capacity." All of us are endowed with the necessary faculties for thinking and understanding. And it is my sincere desire to help you discover, develop and enhance that ability. Limited and imperfect as I am, I believe that I can help you if you will let me, if you will help me help you. Thus, my teaching approach involves leading you in a journey towards training your minds to think critically and logically: be it reading a book or analyzing problems, as Socrates said, “I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.“ It is my aspiration that you begin taking for yourself the responsibility for what you want to learn and how you will learn, and reap its fruits in the process. This choice is your opportunity.
Confident learning begins with knowing yourself: your limitations and capabilities. Being sure of this, you should be confident that you can do those that are within your capabilities. Likewise, you can learn – at least one at a time – those that are still outside your capabilities. That is the essence of learning: adding to your storehouse of knowledge, skills and competencies.
You will learn through this process if you want to, if you will choose to. Overcoming the pull of the past - especially those that are already unwanted habits - is, as Covey said, “in large part a matter of having clear identity and strong purpose; of knowing who you are and what you want to accomplish. Poor performance can often be attributed to poor prioritization and organization. Weak resolve is easily uprooted by emotion, mood and circumstance” (emphasis, mine).
Learning appears to be a receiving but quite the contrary, it is much a function giving: of how much the student/learner gives, following the natural law. It is largely a personal quest beginning with a desire to learn. When the strong desire for learning is there, it will often be just a matter of time ‘coz “if there is a will there is a way.” I expressed this in the equation:

Learning = Student’s input x (1 + others’ input) - some loss
Following this, my approach is “you study, then we discuss”. In this, you need to research and study all information relevant to the topics-at-hand. You are expected to read with comprehension and to try to understand what you read, to consult a dictionary if needed. In class, we just discuss the main points that need to be clarified as well as your queries on any aspect of the topics that you may not yet understand. So, class hours are opportunities for you to verify how you understood the topics that you studied: by listening to the discussion and asking questions whenever you have difficulty with any topic, either in class or one-on-one with me. Covey puts it nicely by saying, “If you don’t let a teacher know at what level you are by asking a question, or revealing your ignorance, you will not learn or grow. You cannot pretend for long, for you will eventually be found out. Admission of ignorance is often the first step in our education.” Though this approach entails some difficulties for you and for me, this is a good means of developing your confidence that provides a learning experience for all of us. Getting to know the information you need is usually a matter of asking the right questions.
the personal touch...
For purposes of my subjects, research simply means finding answers to your questions. This is done primarily by data gathering from references and/or experts. When you think you have found the answer(s) to your queries, you must try to understand them, be able to restate your findings in your own words and to explain them to others. One of the best ways to verify how you understood a topic is to try applying what you have learned. Only then can you say that your research is done.
It is important to do your own research within the allotted time. Do not limit your resource materials to a few books or solely the internet. Ask the experts in the field, watch informative broadcasts, etc. Discuss with your classmates what you are finding out. That is very effective! Much of what I learned when I was in college came from trying to answer the questions of my classmates. They provided me with the questions that turned out to be needed for exploring the topics-at-hand, I did all I could to answer their questions and we all learned in the process. But don’t be hard on yourself for the things you don’t know yet for as Jon Holt said, the” true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do”
Yes, real learning requires discipline, the ability to keep promises and to honor commitments to yourself first and then to others. You need first to set a personal goal and then work to achieve that goal. You need first to choose to learn.
And take note that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” [4].
As Lao Tze said, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step” let’s begin and enjoy our learning journey!

Learning Practice in the Classroom
I am aware that you may also be busy with other matters but we all are. It is estimated that students remember 10% of what is heard, 50% of what is seen, 70% of what they say, and 90% of what they do [1]. As Helen Keller said, “I am only one, and yet I am one. I cannot do everything and yet I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” The following are intended as avenues for your practice of goal-setting, discipline and learning in my classes. These are also meant as extra sources of your grade for the subject if you will be diligent in doing them. But neglect of these requirements may also pull down your grade.
o Use a subject notebook. Write down chronologically all activities that you do for one particular subject in a notebook, be it research, interview, seatwork, solving problems, discussion with a classmate, etc. Include also your own personal comments or remarks about what you did, such as what you learned from it. Write name of the reference book for research entry. The name of the interviewee and the topics discussed must be written for interview and discussion entries. Identify the problems solved as Prob.No./Page No. Always bring your notebook to class for checking by your instructor. Your starting entries for each day of class must be your answer to: aided with the paradigm ___________________, my goals for this subject today are _______________ so I prepared for our class today by ________________.
o Many students shun the idea of preparing and submitting academic requirements not realizing that their outputs substantiate their claims. As Charlize Theron said, “There is only so much you can do, but if somebody doesn’t give you a chance there is nothing you can do.” In my classes, written reports serve as a student's presentation to me, just like any report you will make for your future employer or client. All of your works are expected to be neat and clean.
o Write using your own words. It is expected that your choice of words will be different from your classmates’. Thus, reports with similar composition or choice of words will have comparatively lower grades. Statements copied word for word from references must be enclosed in quotation marks adequately citing the author within the report or at least in a footnote.
o It is helpful to organize first your thoughts and ideas before starting to write your report. Prepare a draft of your report. Have a couple of introductory statements to begin your report. End with the concluding statement, or the essence of, your entire write-up. You can then write your final report to include the most important things you want to say within the allotted number of pages. Reports in my classes must have at least 3 paragraphs: (a) introduction; (b) main body; and (c) concluding paragraph.
Some students find these too taxing but then again Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So… sail away from the safe harbor. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Covey also emphasized what learning is all about when he said, “To know and not do is really not to know. To learn and not do is not to learn.”

sir magi's
handsout is very inspirational.
when i allready finish to read the handsout i realize that if were have a dream we can't achieve that easily.
The famous persons mentioned in the handout have their own different stories of success. They were able to attain success because of their determination to achieve their goals. They chose to believe that they can do it and they are able. They did not just believe, but they did their very best effort to reach their goals. The handout just tells us that not all things are easily get. We must be hardworking enough to attain our goals. In order to be a real professional, of course, we have to study hard. The handout becomes your way of sending us the message that you are willing to help us achieve our goals. In order for you to do that, you need us to cooperate with you which we must really do if we are really determined to learn. The handout simply wants to tell us, students, to be persuasive in everything we do. If others can, then so do us. The handout tells us to be confident that we can be able to reach our goal. We must believe that we are capable to do things; that we have the guts. The handout helps us practice goal setting and discipline. If we have discipline, we can do our work perfectly and we will be able to attain our goal.
This blog makes me realize that i have the right to choose my own path to take.
It also gave me enough confident to believe in myself that if they can reach their goal, so there's no reason for me to give up to all the challenges that comes to my life.
Wow! A very inspiring blog like this is worth reading. This blog made me realize how a person can perform at their best. Everyone of us has a freedom of choice, everyone of us can do everything we wanted to do and make the most out of it.
akala ko e nakakaboring ang blog ni sir magi kc ang haba haba,pero nung binabasa ko na e nakakainspire pla..it helps me to realized what may goal is..dahil d2 determinado na kong tupadin ung mga pangarap ko...may kaya pa pla kong gawin na di ko pa nagagawa..inspiring tlga..sana mabasa din ng iba.
Bravo! Actually I like to read it again and again kahit medyo mahaba. Sulit naman sa mababasa. I really really like this piece of work. Full of important and inspiring messages kasi. Naamaze ako dun sa line na "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think." Astig talaga! Sir, thank you because you also want us to develop our critical thinking. About the learning practice in classroom, I can say that Sir is very strict and formal but reasonable. Siguro gusto nyo kaming ihanda in case na maging professional na kami. Naappreciate ko po un. Thank you po ulit. Dun naman sa last part, Sir makes me more confident on myself. I agree on "If others can do, therefore I also can...." Because of this, mas lalo na akong magsisipag sa study. magfofocus na ako at magiging mas serious. I know na may magagawa pa ako. Thank you for all what I read. Very inspiring talaga. I highly recommend that others should also read this. This is a very important writings and consist of good lessons. These words will change us into a better person! Sir thank you again. God bless!
This blog brought a lot of inspiration to those who have already read this--a food for the soul indeed. We must always put God in our lives because there's no bigger hypocrite than the person who pretends he doesn't need Jesus. We just have to motivate ourselves and cultivate what God has given, then for sure we'll reap good things out of it. If others can, so do I! A very long yet an inspiring publish by sir magi..^_^
a very inspiring blog indeed!!!
it was long and took time to read but it was worth it. . it tells us that we are all equal, no is superior than anyone. . that we can achieve what we want if we only have the initiative, . that learning must begin with ourselves, we have to strive to reach our goals. .
overall it is a very inspiring and helpful blog. .
Its very true that the primary reason why we take formal education on different universities is to become successful to whatever field or career we want to go on or deal with. We want to be successful not just for ourselves but primarily for our loved ones or our family.
Everyone is given a gift that should be cherish and boost. It depends opn one self on how we deal with this knowledge. It depends on us if we are going to make this knowledge grow or prosper. If we want to become a productive one and use this knowledge on a good purpose.
Being weak, sick or disabled should not be considered as a hgindrance in reaching our dreams in life. Instead this shopuld be a chalenge for us to become more persistent in doing such things to reach our goals. We should believe in our own capacity that we can do it and through the help of our God.
we should not limit ourselves to just one thing but we should explore to many things and search for the best.
freedom of choice.....
sarap pakinggan....
actually, this blog is very interesting pala.. and inspiring. nung sinisimulan ko pa lang basahin tinatamad ako kc akala ko boring pero i was wrong.. i was enlightened by the things i've read in this blog. nung nabasa ko to dame ko narealize. kesyo, dapat pla ganito dapat pla ganun... dapat pla ndi ko gngawa ung ganito dapat di ko iniisip ung ganun.. basta basahin nyo para malaman nyo ung sinasabe ko at maexperience ung naexperience ko nung binabasa ko 'to... try nyo...
The blog or rather the experiences of life proves that all of us individuals under the sun do have a choice to choose their success in any other way. Some of us don't seriously work on our construction to our own future... Inspiring of course...
Just don't loose any hope in our lives because that is the one that we will use to ever move on to victory...
Be the Cream of the Crop...
a must read blog. very inspiring. tao talaga ang magdidikta sa gusto nyang mangyare sa buhay nya. kasi lahat tayo binigyan ng freedom of choice. basta basahin nyo ng may mpulot kayong magagandang bagay dito.
At first, it's hard for me to understand Sir Magi's blog. Maybe because I'm not into reading, especially those that will take me long time to read. But as I go on reading, I become interested on it because of those true-to-life stories that will surely inspire any student (who is seeking for a better future) to do the right thing by choosing his/her decisions to achieve his/her goal. Try to be patient. "Patience is a virtue" as what many people say. This blog also wants us to remember that God is always there for each and every one of us, that we should let Him enter in our daily life in facing all the challenges and even our success. The bottom line for me is, "Live well in this world, choose the right path that suits you, try to reach your goal but always put God before everything."
Thanks for the inspirational blog that you've shared to us. We really appreciate it. I hope marami pang makabasa nito. (Huh, hirap mag-English. Hehehe) But i tried.
Thanks again, Sir.
This blog made me realize so many things….
With strong and compelling goals we are driven to grow and expand and develop ourselves towards what we want from and for our lives. Compelling goals have the power to move us. Done properly and specifically, goals transform our lives. We all have goals and aspirations. Much to our chagrin though, our goals and aspirations require effort and often lots of it. As well, one typically does not achieve his or her goals over night. This takes time…often much time.
In everything we do, we shouldn’t just say, “ ala, pwede na ito” we should always do our best in every tasks that was given to us…
God give everyone of us individual gifts and talents that we need to cherish. Gifts and talents that we need to build up.
Always put God at the center if our life
Thank you for sharing this simple but inspiring points of view..
God Bless Sir Magi..
I wonder why he entitled it as Class Handout. Anyway, no matter what the reason behind it, the message he wants to convey is clear to me. I was moved by the personal experiences of different individuals who became successful in their fields despite of some restrictions in their lives.
In his class Handout, I was able to understand better what learning is. Before, I thought that learning could only be acquired in the four corners of a classroom neglecting to consider the wisdom that I gained from others, including my experiences and observations. I thought learning is enough when you pass the exams but I never realized that you only learn when you know how to apply what you have learned.
When he said that the future need not be a continuation of an undesirable past, I began to plan for myself and assessed what I really want in life and what I aimed for in the future. I realized that no one and nothing can prevent us from getting what we want as long as we are in the right track meaning that we abide in the existing laws that we have and that we do not pose any harm to others while we are in the course of achieving our goals. Moreover, we should have the determination, the will power to surpass every barrier that may come across our way. As Sir Magi put it, our freedom of choice is our way of how we can change our future. And yes, we all have the freedom and power to choose the path we should take to change our undesirable status in life. In short, we can be better individuals than we used to be.
Sir Magi talked about also our ability to learn. I agree with him that human beings are creatures of curiosity. I remember in our Logic class last semester, man’s curiosity led him to ask questions about the existence of everything in the universe. With that curiosity, man was able to understand everything around him and from there philosophy came into being as well as other disciplines that we are now studying in schools. This only proves that Sir Magi’s concept of the ability to learn started even before.
His views regarding on how to behave in the classroom during classes are of great importance that everyone ought to read and apply. I was able to follow some of his recommendations except for some items which I think not very necessary. First, the notebook used for jotting down notes which transpired during the discussion. I personally do have notebooks for my classes but I think it is not really necessary that everyone should follow his prescribed size of notebook. I mean, it is not really important whether you have a small or big notebook as long as you have indicated in your notes the very essence of the lesson discussed in the class. Second, as engineering students, we should be practicing the use of engineering lettering. But sadly UB Engineering students are not trained to write that way. As long as you know how to write legibly and neatly, some consider it already as engineering lettering. It is one of Sir Magi’s concerns that we should be practicing especially when writing down reports. Third, when caught using cellular phones in class anyone will be considered as absent. This is only true for people who use their cell phones in classrooms resulting to not paying attention to the professor. But cell phone users like me once in a while check whether I receive a call or text message during a class. Will I be considered absent for that reason only? I guess, not. hehe!!
To Sir Magi, may you continue to inspire other people’s lives. Through your works, we gain knowledge that is very essential in our daily living…
sir magi's blog is very inspiring, its perfect and interesting.. from the top up to the end eh talagang nakakapaisip, napakaganda talagang basahin, hindi nakakasawa kahit medyo mahaba.. thanks for sharing us a very wonderful message and by this, teaching us so many lessons.. this is for everybody!
The content of this class handout was very inspiring for me. It makes me think of the many hindrances that I myself has pass through life. But as I have read the experiences of those people,I was really fascinated in ther will to go on in life, until their reach their dreams. This blog also open my eyes for having a choice in life, and it's true that we should think for our future. It also tells me about how faith should also get in the way of everything we do. God is always there for us, we also need to believe in ourselves that we can do something. For me, I could say that after reading this blog there are three words that was kept in my mind, belief,act, and result. Because if we believe in our dreams that we can do it, then we can. Second of all if we act on that dreams of ours, we can achieve the result that we have been looking for. As a part of the initiative that each one of us have in this life, we could achieve success. This blog should be read by every students, because it will help them to be enlighten in life. I also appreciated the techniques that Sir Magi shared about studying and learning. It makes me more determined to learn and share my knowledge to everyone and by the help also of our Almighty God.
Lastly I would like to thank Sir Magi for sharing this wonderful Blog, I really like it and even love it..
man's lifetime is a learning process, even when we are still infants we learn and up to now learning still never stops, this blog is an inspiration. it gives us the reality that we face struggles in life, in our family, studies, friends,and even in ourselves, but the question is... what are we going to do? its clear to me that God wants us to excel in every aspect of our life. and despite these struggles our dreams, plans, and goals in our lives must be our focus,, giving up is not an option because these struggles is the acid test of God's abundant blessings, whether we are ready to receive them or not,,, life has many things to teach us and our determination will help us reach our goal,, and when we make our stumbling blocks as stepping stone that's when we can say that we learned something,,, all it needs is Faith in God, and our will to face life... thanks sir magi.. may this blog be an inspiration to others
Thank you very much sir for sharing this blog. It is very nice and inspiring. It would be a great help us in knowing the importance of learning and achieving our goal.It tells us that God is always on us, thank Him and adore Him. Have deep faith in times of trials. If others can do, we can do it also. Godbless!!

wow, how interesting that blog is... it really gives lots of inspiration to others specially to the students like me... a laos read some inspiring books but this blog is really great... juz a short of that but it tackles many things that makes us at our best and be the person that we want to be.. even thou we commit certain errors in our life but the blog tells us that we dont have to surrender in the fight of our life, juz continue pursuing your goal with great determination and also with the help of our beloved God.. pinaalala talaga satin na wag natin makaklinutan ang ating Panginoon kasi kung wala sa puso natin Siya, ndi natin mararamdaman ang fulfillment of our success and everything will be useless.. thanks sir pasia for telling us to read this blog of sir magi..
wonders of learning...
this blog is recommended to every students. it tells how the students response from what they are thinking , from what they are observe and see around him. its a matter of decision making. wether you go for the right one or the other way.this blog make the students to think of what they are doing or where they where going.you, yes you.you always have your freedom to learn from your everyday living.just learn how to use your right for your own good.
Inspiring blog..everyone has their own way and knowledge to achieve their goal.."KUNG KAYA NG IBA,MAKAKAYA KO RIN.."everyone has their own chance para mapakita what they can do, no one can degrade you kung ano ba talaga kaya mo gawin, because all of us era born differently..sobrang inspired po ako sa mga testimonial na nabasa ko, mas lumlakas yong loob ko n ipursue na maabot ko ang mga pangarap ko..This blog showed and imbued me whats the real meaning of life.Kahit gaano kadami ng pagsubok na dumating dapat kaya pa rin.And the bottom line is "PUT GOD IN THE CENTER OF OUR LIFE AND NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.."
"Faith without action is dead".
Haizzz... hirap mging engineer...
Thank you po Sir for this entry though its from way back 2007 at narealize ko po na di ko pala talaga binasa ito nung inintroduce nyo samin itong blogspot nyo nung statics pa 😁. Honestly po, this is just what I needed (motivation, tips on how to study, managing my time, prioritizing) before my fight on this semester starts kasi po medyo pinanghihinaan ng loob 😊 Excited to read more. God Bless po 😇
I have a lot of realization not just after reading it, but also while reading it. Who am I in two words, "was encouraged". Thank you Sir for this inspiring blog that made me realized there's indeed a way if you're willing. You successfully made me think Sir. I've been willing to learn and grow more but I have these poor habits. It's so true that poor performance can often be attributed to poor prioritization and organization. My first year as a college student was because mostly by the grace of God. But this time, I'm not a fool and little faith servant of God anymore. I've been praying for deliverance in this situation and I think this is God's answer, way and help to overcome myself. God is with you Sir! God bless po. 😊
